Clover Mites in Cleveland
In the spring and autumn, clover mites are known to invade structures by the thousands. Clover mites are a nuisance pest found worldwide, including the U.S. Clover mites were formally considered an occasional pest, however, they are now a serious pest in urban areas. The housing boom and its affiliated suburban sprawl, along with well-fertilized lawns has likely led to the drastic increase in clover mite infestations.
Clover Mite Habitat
Clover mites will spend winter mainly in the egg stage. During this time, they are placed under bark, under sheathing of buildings, in cracks in fence posts, in foundation cracks, or dry, protected spaces. In the early spring, the winter eggs will begin to hatch and start their life cycle. The entire generation is completed during the spring or early summer. Clover mites enjoy the warm sun and congregate in homes on sunny southern and eastern facing exposures. They can become a major nuisance to homeowners and appear like a dark speck crawling around doors, windows, curtains, drapes, furniture, and siding.
Clover Mite Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers
The largest frustration with clover mites is their ability to invade structures with astronomical numbers. In a documented case from 1954, an estimated 250,000 mites were crawling around in a single bedroom. When crushed, the clover mite will leave behind a stain of its natural red color that may appear like blood. Since they are so small, an infestation may be taking place and growing before a homeowner realizes there is a problem.
