Millipedes in Cleveland

Millipedes are household pests that normally live outdoors. They are found in every state in the U.S. and can be located in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico as well. Millipedes are sometimes referred to as “thousand leggers” and feed on decaying and damp wood and vegetable matter, as well as green leaves and tender roots on the ground. Most millipedes can protect themselves through a gland that secretes an unpleasant smell.

Millipede Habitat

The diet of millipedes is primarily decaying organic matter, but they will also consume young plants. Should they eat on a young plant, there is usually minimal damage to it. This insect requires high moisture levels to survive, so they often hide under objects during the day. Once night comes, they will leave their habitats and crawl over patios, foundations, and sidewalks. Autumn is the most popular season for millipedes to migrate into buildings.

Millipede Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

Millipedes have been found to come into structures in large numbers, however, they do not sting, bite, or transmit disease. They also leave clothing, wood, and food alone. Millipedes are simply a nuisance pest and will typically invade damp basements, crawl spaces, or the ground level of structures. If there are frequent sightings of millipedes indoors, there is likely a chance that there are large amounts of them outside breeding in the lawn close to the foundation. Millipedes do not fare well indoors and will not survive more than a few days unless there are very damp or moist conditions.
