Cellar Spiders in Cleveland

Cellar spiders are harmless spiders with extremely elongated, delicate legs. They are often mistaken for daddy longlegs spiders, though they are not related. These spiders are frequently found in homes, especially in garages, basements, and cellars, which explains their common name. They are commonly seen in corners and on ceilings, typically hanging upside down. Cellar spiders are natural predators of larger house spiders found indoors, as well as flies, bees, wasps, and even other cellar spiders when food is scarce.

Cellar Spider Habitat

Outdoors, cellar spiders typically inhabit cave entrances, cliff crevices, and other sheltered locations. Indoors, they are commonly found in moist cellars, basements, crawlspaces, garages, and quiet, dimly lit areas. Cellar spiders construct untidy, irregular webs and are extremely responsive to vibrations, quickly ensnaring any unwitting insects that stray into their webs. Both male and female cellar spiders can be found in climate-controlled buildings throughout the year, where they benefit from stable temperatures and reduced predator threats compared to their outdoor habitats.

Cellar Spider Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

Cellar spiders pose minimal threats and dangers to humans. They are not venomous to people. Their bites are rare and typically result in mild irritation similar to a mosquito bite. They are classified as nuisance pests due to the extensive webbing they create. Unlike several other spider species that consume their old webs before constructing new ones, cellar spiders consistently build upon their webs, resulting in abundant webbing that can be cumbersome to remove and unattractive in residential and commercial properties.
